ESG Investing

ESG investing allows customers to align their investments with ESG values - for example, avoiding companies that produce chemical weapons and overweighting companies with a low carbon footprint.

The portfolio invests in equity and bond ETFs from the iShares ESG Aware range. These seek to provide similar returns to their respective broad market benchmarks, while only selecting acceptable companies under specific ESG rules.

The ESG Portfolio also invests in a renewable energy-focused ETF, as well as treasury and gold ETFs, while avoiding investments in certain controversial commodities.

FAQ

  • How is Save making a difference in the health of our planet?

Improving the well-being of our customers and the planet is a foundational goal of Save. To achieve this goal, Save provides an ESG Portfolio that plants a tree on the behalf of our customers through qualifying deposits.

  • How do I plant trees with Save?

First, you select Save's ESG Portfolio as your preferred strategy during Sign up. Then, with qualifying Market Savings deposits, trees are planted for you by Save and our partnerships.

  • Is there a limit to how many trees Save plants on my behalf?

No. There is no limit to how many trees you can plant. We challenge you to continue saving until we meet our 20,000-tree commitment.

  • What are the benefits of trees on the climate, biodiversity, health and jobs?

    • 1 tree = 150 kg of stored CO₂
A tree stores about 150 kg of CO₂ over 30 years. This data comes from the calculation method defined in the book "Forêt et Carbone" (Forest and Carbon) published in 2015. However, it is interesting to note that in tropical areas, a tree stores about 300 kg of CO₂ over 30 years ("Atlas of the world's forests", Boulier and Simon, 2010). However, we would rather keep the figure of 150 kg of stored CO₂ per tree, so that we don’t overestimate our impact on the climate.

    • 1 tree = 3 animal shelters
An IRSTEA study published in Biological Conservation found correlations between a tree's species and the number of microhabitats contains within its bark, branches or cavities. A deciduous tree thus provides an average of 3 animal shelters, and a coniferous tree provides an average of 2.5 animal shelters.

    • 1 tree = 4 months of oxygen
A tree produces between 20 and 150 kg of O2 per year. In order to cover a person's oxygen needs for one year, an average of 3 trees are needed.

    • 1 tree = 1 hour of work per year
According to an FAO article published in the Unasylva magazine, afforestation and reforestation activities are the best opportunities for job creation. In the case of afforestation or reforestation activities, 5 million hectares of trees planted annually will create 4 to 5 million full-time equivalent jobs.

  • Which tree species are planted on the projects?

Save's 20,000 trees are 50% chestnut, 25% red and white oak, and a 25% mixture of caryers, kaki, black walnut, buccaneers, northern buccaneers, and robiners. Between the rows, there will be three rows of hazelnuts, too.
